Sun-Drenched & Untamed: Embracing Garden-Style Summer Florals

Written by My Glendale Florist

There is a distinct magic to summer in Glendale. As the days stretch out and the golden hour lingers over the Verdugo Mountains, our approach to floral design shifts. Summer isn’t the time for rigid, tight, hyper-structured arrangements. It’s the season of abundance, movement, and effortless elegance.

At My Glendale Florist, our signature garden-style design mimics the beautiful spontaneity of nature itself. We craft arrangements that look as though they were gathered during a morning stroll through a hidden, sun-drenched European courtyard—airy, dimensional, and full of life.

If you are looking to bring the vibrant warmth of the season into your home, here are the summer blossoms and design principles we are obsessing over right now.

The Stars of the Summer Garden
To achieve that signature, freshly-plucked-from-the-earth aesthetic, we look for blooms that offer varied textures, heights, and rich, seasonal colors. Here are a few of our summer favorites:

Garden Roses & Peonies (Early Summer): The ultimate heavy hitters for romance. Garden roses open up incredibly wide, offering a lush, pillowy focal point that standard roses simply can't match.

Hydrangeas: The ultimate chameleon of summer. Whether in classic antique green, dusty blue, or vibrant white, their cloud-like clusters provide the perfect voluminous base for a garden arrangement.

Delphinium & Larkspur: To capture the wild, untamed essence of a cottage garden, you need height. These towering spikes add dramatic vertical movement and come in breathtaking shades of true blue and purple.

Cosmos & Scabiosa: We call these our "dancer" flowers. With their delicate, wiry stems, they float above the rest of the arrangement, catching the light and swaying with the slightest breeze.

Anatomy of a Garden-Style Arrangement
What exactly makes an arrangement "garden-style"? It all comes down to mimicking how flowers actually grow. When we curate a piece for your summer table, we focus on three main elements:

Asymmetry and Breathability: Perfect symmetry can feel a bit sterile. Instead, we let stems dictate their own path. One side might reach out a little further, or a single trailing vine might spill over the lip of the vase. We leave "negative space" so every single bloom has room to breathe and be appreciated.

Textural Greenery: Greenery isn’t an afterthought or a filler—it’s the framework. We love using hyper-seasonal elements like jasmine vine, eucalyptus, and even fruiting branches (like olive branch or citrus foliage) to ground the design and add that authentic, earthy texture.

A Sun-Kissed Palette: Summer is the perfect time to play with color. This season, we are moving away from monochromatic looks and leaning into warm, complex palettes: think rich terracotta mixed with buttery yellow, peach paired with soft lavender, or vibrant corals offset by deep, moody plums.

Pro-Tip from the Shop: Summer heat in the valley can be tough on fresh cut flowers! To keep your garden-style arrangements thriving, place them away from direct afternoon sunlight and drafty A/C vents. Change the water entirely every two days, and give the stems a fresh, angled snip to keep them drinking easily.

Bring Summer Indoors
Whether you are hosting an intimate patio dinner party, celebrating a milestone, or simply want to brighten up your entryway, a loose, organic floral arrangement is the perfect way to capture the spirit of the season.
